“Go therefore and make disciples of all nationS...” Matthew 28:19
Missions is the “mission” of the church. In Matthew 28:18-20, known as the Great Commission, Jesus commands his first followers to make disciples of all nations. But this command was not for the first few Christians only; it is a command to all Christians today. The Church of Jesus Christ exists to make disciples from their local communities all the way to tribes in third world countries. Red Bud First Baptist Church takes this command seriously and we are always looking for ways to reach the lost with the Gospel of Jesus. Acts 1:8, another Great Commission verse, gives us a blueprint for where we should go with the good news of Jesus. It says to go to, “Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” In other words, Jesus wants his church to take the message of salvation in Christ alone locally, regionally, cross-culturally, and internationally.
Locally
Local missions for us includes taking the Gospel to Red Bud and the immediate surrounding communities. One of the ways we do this is through Vacation Bible School. Every summer we host a Vacation Bible School at our church facility and invite kids from the community to come and hear the great truths of the Bible taught faithfully. It is always a great time of fun and learning. Many of the kids who attend have no church home so we are able to introduce these kids to Jesus Christ for the first time.
Regionally
Regional missions for us includes taking the Gospel to other places in Illinois and the metro-east area of St. Louis, MO. One missions event we engaged in recently was partnering with a fellow Baptist church in Steeleville, IL, helping them reach out to their community through baking cookies for and visiting with the firemen who serve that community.
Cross-culturally
Cross-cultural missions for us includes taking the Gospel to those who may not look, talk, or act like us. This includes crossing ethnic and perhaps even language barriers to serve those who do not know Christ. Recently, we partnered with a ministry called Good Samaritan Ministries to reach out to impoverished people who live in Washington Park, IL. We served lunch that day, worshiped together, and preached the Gospel to the folks of that community who gathered at the center that day.
Internationally
International missions for us includes taking the Gospel to the ends of the earth. In recent years, members of our church have gone to Thailand, Mexico, Kenya, and Cuba. Whether it has been sharing the gospel through VBS in Thailand and Mexico, going door to door and street by street in Cuba sharing the love of Christ, or training pastors in Kenya to better lead their churches, our goal is to exalt the name of Jesus in all places by making disciples.
