What is Sunday School?
Sunday School is one of the times when small groups of people gather together around the Word of God at Red Bud Bible Church. The Sunday School classes typically consist of a teacher and anywhere from just a few to as many as approximately 15 students. Each class session is centered around the Bible, with the expectation that God will speak to us through the pages of Scripture. There is a weekly lesson that attempts to connect the truth of the Gospel with each participant’s life. There is also a time of prayer where the class lifts up one another to God.
Why Participate in a Sunday School Class?
So why join a Sunday School class? While there are certainly other opportunities within the church to fulfill the commands that Jesus has given to us, Sunday School has the potential of combining many of them into one setting. For instance, Sunday School naturally creates a perfect time for fellowship. As we gather together in small groups, we build relationships in a much more intimate way than in the corporate worship gathering. While large group worship is essential to a healthy church, Sunday School adds another dimension that is equally as important. As people who love Jesus come together, we can draw strength and wisdom from one another by living in community around the Word of God. There are few joys greater than when the people of God are gathered together under the teaching of Scripture. This teaching leads to another of Christ’s commands to the church-discipleship. Jesus told the church to make disciples, teaching them to obey all that He has commanded. As we are confronted with the truth of the Bible and see one another living it out, disciples are made and we are then equipped to become disciple-makers ourselves. While discipleship is essential for the health of a Christian, evangelism is essential for those who do not yet know Christ as Savior. The Good News (Gospel) of Jesus Christ is essential to an effective Sunday School class who wishes to reach the lost. It is our mission that the Gospel be the center of each class so that people can hear the works of our great God, especially about Jesus’ death and resurrection-the means by which a person is saved. Ministry is another vital part of Sunday School life. Classes look for ways to be a blessing to each other, the church as a whole, and the community at large. In a way, each class is a microcosm of the entire church, seeking to be the hands and feet of Jesus in this world. These four aspects lead to the bigger picture of worship. Sunday School can be an act of worship as we experience the beauty of the one who created us and saves us through His Son. As we come to know him and obey him, our worship becomes much deeper than writing a check or singing a song-it becomes the heartbeat of our life.
Who Can Participate in Sunday School?
Sunday School is open to anyone and everyone. There are absolutely no requirements for a person to meet in order to join a class. You do not have to be a member of RBBC in order to join. You don’t even have to be a Christian. We want to share the message of Jesus with all, so please come and join a class whoever and wherever you are. Classes are typically broken down by age and/or gender, but not always. There are some classes that are for men only, some for women only, and some that are co-ed. We also have Sunday School for school aged children.
